Writing Prompt #24
The transition to fall and more about plastic!
Warm-up
As we make the shift from summer to fall, there can be a lot of changes inside and out. To warm up, make a list of things you are noticing these days. Leaves, more spiders, the light? How does the change of season make you feel?
Writing Prompt #1: More about plastic.
I love this poem by Elizabeth Bradfield that first appeared in Poetry in 2021.

Now, write your own poem about “a personal history” with an item or substance. This could be plastic—we all have it in our lives! Or maybe you want to reflect on wood, or oil, or grass? Dive in and write for 20 minutes.

Many congrats to Chloe Dalton for winning the Wainwright Prize for Book of the Year! This book of nature writing surprised and moved me. Can you remember a time you had a close or chance encounter with another species? What happened? What stories do have to tell? Write them down and check out this wonderful book!
“I tell myself not to count the years ahead in which she might never again come, but rather cherish the days she has given me of her own free will, when she lowered her species’ instinctive guard against humans, and shared the beauty and mystery of her presence in silent and graceful companionship. I will remember her leaving, but I will always know that before she did, she always, first, looked back.”
