Second poem in The Seat
Many thank to editors Kate Hanson Foster and Michael Schmeltzer for including “To the Class of 2033” in The Seat. This poem came out of the fall of 2020. My oldest daughter was starting online Kindergarten since the schools were still closed in our area due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was also a time of severe wildfire smoke in western Washington. We were inside for days due to the terrible air quality.
As a parent, I was overwhelmed and scared. In order to log into the class zoom, each 5-year-old was given their school email which included their last name and graduation date. Seeing the year 2033 (and wondering what the world would be by the time my daughter graduated) was the start of this poem.
